Outreach to Township Commissioners and Legislators
It does not matter if you live in an elected official’s ward, district, or state. If you have something to say, say it. The more information they have, the better able they are to make an informed, rather than political, decision. Speak to their emotions but back your letter with facts. Thank you for your support!
Here are a few suggestions to make things easier but by all means please use your own:
From the family of a high school rower:
Dear Commissioner xxxxxx,
Our daughter/son rows for Harriton/Lower Merion. The sport has been great, giving him/her the opportunity to take part in a team sport whereas without rowing, he/she would not have the opportunity. As parents, we have to pay dues and raise money to support the sport. Because the township does not have a facility, the district must bus our children to a crowded facility in Conshohocken, one which restricts the amount of time the students can get on the water. If our students can launch from Lower Merion, then more of their day could be spent rowing (and doing their homework) than waiting for buses to unload and standing in line to launch their boats.
We would greatly appreciate if you would support building a boathouse on our side of the river.
From a resident of Lower Merion who rows:
Dear Commissioner xxxxx:
I live in Lower Merion and I also enjoy the sport of rowing. I rowed in HS/College and today row out of xxxxx. It would be a great convenience if we built a boathouse on our side of the river on the upper Schuylkill, above the dam. I would be able to row more often as I would have not have to travel as far and vie for space in and around Boathouse row.
Please support the project to build a beautiful community boathouse for Lower Merion.
From a resident of Lower Merion who is not a rower:
Dear Commissioner xxxxx:
I am not the parent of a rower and I do not row myself. I am, however, a resident of Lower Merion and a taxpayer in both Lower Merion and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
We have a wonderful community, which is made even better when we work together as a community. The recent Cynwyd Trail is one such example of how a community oriented project enhances our community, makes this a better place to live, which increases the desire of other people to live here. Building a community boathouse would be another such enhancement, which if built and maintained to the highest standards, would again increase the value of living in Lower Merion.
Please support the project to build a beautiful community boathouse for Lower Merion.
From a coach:
Dear Commissioner xxxxx,
I coach crew at Harriton/Lower Merion high school. This sport enables hundreds of kids each year to participate in a sport that does not require exceptional athletic skills or years of training. When the students start our program, they are all equal. They learn how to train, how to develop discipline, how to juggle school and after-school activities, and they develop friendships that last a lifetime. For over sixty years, Lower Merion schools trained out of Boathouse Row in Philadelphia, but the popularity of the sport squeezed us out of the downriver location. Now we must vie for space in an overcrowded boathouse in Conshohocken.
Recently, Haverford and Malvern high schools, along with the borough of Conshohocken, constructed a boathouse. One of the most important points to this is that now two schools can launch boats down a ramp onto a dock, whereas at the Conshohocken boathouse, we must wait for boat after boat to use the ramp. Our kids attend school, so the amount of time wasted, impacts their ability to progress in rowing as well as in their school work.
A boathouse on our side of the river would reduce the travel time, reduce the congestions and give these kids the overall experience they deserve.
Please support the project to build a beautiful community boathouse for Lower Merion.
